Stuffed, Sleepy, and Reflective: A Post-Thanksgiving Hyphenly

Dear Hyphenly Readers,

Happy day-after-Thanksgiving! If you’re anything like us, you’re still full, still sleepy, and still recovering from a very chaotic 24 hours.

For many immigrants, Thanksgiving is equal parts delicious and disorienting. Want to hear a firsthand take? Saadia spills it all: sober-hosting, lamb-not-turkey, and navigating strong kitchen personalities—in this week’s solo episode of Immigrantly. Through humor and candid storytelling, she shares how immigrants remix American traditions and why the messiness of holidays makes them matter more.

Listen to Saadia dish it out on Spotify and Apple.

Whether you’re catching up on the news or planning a couch-day with leftovers, today we’re digging into one of humanity’s oldest debates: Strength vs. Smarts

On one side: Netflix’s newest obsession, Physical: Asia, where men and women across Korea, Japan, Turkey, Mongolia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, and Thailand showcase their power through traditional sports from ssireum and Bökh wrestling to Muay Thai and Turkish oil wrestling. The show has sparked a wave of creators sharing cultural deep dives and cheering on their favorites.

On the other: the 75th Miss Universe pageant, still raising the question—do beauty pageants matter anymore?

And yet, contestants like Nadeen Ayoub, the first woman to represent Palestine, remind us why these platforms endure.

“I represent every Palestinian woman and child whose strength the world needs to see. We are more than our suffering—we are resilience, hope, and the heartbeat of a homeland that lives on through us”

Similarly, Peiliker-Visser's national costume was inspired by the diverse and colorful ecosystem of Bonaire National Marine Park. The 42-year-old pageant queen, who is a mother of four, wanted to highlight "the strength, intelligence, and adaptability of Bonaire's women.”

So, as you ease into the weekend, maybe with a reheated plate and an oversized blanket, we invite you to reflect: What parts of your identity feel strongest right now? Where does your cultural, personal, inherited beauty show up?
