Our Picks for Hispanic Heritage Month

Dear Hyphenly Readers,

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! 🎉 If you’re in the U.S., you know this celebration runs from September 15 to October 15, but do you know why it starts mid-month? Because September 15 marks the Independence Days of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

The month-long observance began as a week in 1968 (thanks to President Johnson) and expanded to a full month under President Reagan in 1988. Today, the Hispanic community makes up nearly 19% of the U.S. population, making the community the largest ethnic and racial group in the country. This month honors their profound impact on American culture and democracy.
