Exposing Eugenics, Unraveling NBA Betting, and Critiquing AI Therapy: This Week at Immigrantly

Dear Hyphenly Readers,

It’s been a good week for immigrants. And that means it’s been a good week for us at Hyphenly!

Anok Yai, a model who has dominated the fashion industry this past year, was awarded the prestigious Model of the Year Award at The Fashion Awards. “My journey — from Egypt to South Sudan to the U.S. — is one of resilience and community. This recognition is for everyone who’s ever seen their story in mine,” said Yai.

Flesh by David Szalay was awarded the International Booker Prize. The book follows István, a Hungarian immigrant in London, who is unfamiliar with the social rituals at school and soon becomes isolated, with his neighbor – a married woman close to his mother’s age – as his only companion. Read a review of the novel here.

Emmy-nominated host of Taste the Nation and Top Chef Padma Lakshmi recently released Padma’s All American: A Cookbook. The book contains more than 100 recipes from the immigrant and Indigenous communities she visits, as well as many from her own family, showing us what really comprises American cuisine.

Now, more than ever, we need to celebrate immigrant wins – and listen to immigrant conversations. This week, we’re diving into some important topics: How have reproductive politics shaped our conversations around contraception? How legal can sports betting really be? What do can you actually get from AI therapy… and is it even worth it?

Reproductive Care, Eugenics And the Myth of Too Many People
Listen on Spotify or Apple

Historian Dr. Lina-Maria Murillo, author of Fighting for Control: Power, Reproductive Care, and Race in the U.S.–Mexico Borderlands, joins Saadia Khan to unravel a century of reproductive politics that have shaped how we talk about abortion, contraception, and “desirability.” The episode exposes how eugenics quietly evolved into modern population-control policies and why blaming poor folks for “too many children” masks the real crisis: resource hoarding and racial capitalism.

Inside the NBA’s Struggle to Keep the Game Honest
Listen on Spotify and Apple

In this episode of Sportly, host Kavitha Davidson investigates the rapidly unraveling world of NBA betting, where a player’s performance, injury reports, and gambling odds collide in ways that threaten the game itself. From Terry Rozier’s flagged exit and Jontay Porter’s ban for betting on his own games to sweeping federal indictments and mafia-backed gambling rings, this story isn’t just about bad actors; it’s about a league that opened the door to legal sports betting and may have lost control of the consequences.

Parental Guilt, Digital Wellness, and Why AI Falls Short — with Israa Nasir
Listen on Spotify and Apple

In this episode of Love-ly, Mehak sits down with psychotherapist and @well.guide founder Israa Nasir to discuss life as a third-culture kid and why she doesn’t feel guilty about not having children, despite parental expectations. Their conversation also takes a turn into the future of digital mental health care, inspired by Israa’s essay, “Outsourcing Emotional Labor to ChatGPT,” and how we should be using AI for in therapy (hint: definitely not your Hinge replies).
