Asian Battle Rappers, World Baseball Classic, and a Muslim Matchmaking Service: This Week at Immigrantly
Dear Hyphenly Readers,
Eid Mubarak! How are you celebrating today?
While most of today's media caters to the audience's needs, few bear witness to the everyday extraordinariness of immigrant life, like love, food, faith, friendship, and creativity. Today, we’re catching you up with what’s been happening at all the podcasts that make up Immigrantly Media. We have some spicy hot takes and heartfelt conversations, so stay tuned as we (hopefully) plunge into spring!
BOYOT (Belong On Your Own Terms) is the next step in your journey to reclaim and reconfigure your identity. It’s our new app, designed to help you think through identity, culture, ambition, relationships, and the stories we carry — with guided reflections, prompts, and frameworks developed over years of conversations on this show

Jonnie Park was born in Argentina to Korean parents, crossed the US-Mexico border undocumented at age three, carried by a mother with two toddlers and nothing but courage, and grew up in Koreatown, Los Angeles, caught between Korean, Latino, and Black American culture. He made history as one of the few Asian battle rappers to gain mainstream notoriety, went along to star in Run-D.M.C, appeared in Awkafina is Nora from Queens, voiced a character in Raya and the Last Dragon—and now he’s written a memoir, Spit: A Life in Battles, dropping April 14th.

The World Baseball Classic has been electric - packed stadiums, global stars, and teams playing with a level of joy that Major League Baseball doesn’t always capture. So why does Team USA feel like the only team not having any fun? In this episode, Kavitha Davidson breaks down what the WBC is revealing about baseball right now: from questions around leadership and “vibes” on the U.S. roster to the bigger issue of American exceptionalism in a sport that has always been global. Joining Kavitha today is Clinton Yates, an ESPN columnist for Andscape and host of Clinton & Friends on ESPN Radio, who covers the intersection of sports, culture, and race.

This week, Mehak (@whathemehak) sits down with Baji from Dear Baji (@leveluponepercent), a free Muslim matchmaking service, to ask the question nobody wants to answer honestly: are you even your type's type? Baji breaks down what she actually sees running her matchmaking platform: people with lists of requirements who've never stopped to ask what they bring to the table or whether the person they want would even want them back. Baji reveals the patterns she sees as a matchmaker: how people get trapped by their own lists while ignoring the one thing that actually leads to compatibility—brutal, honest self-awareness.
